HAMILTON — A little dog in this town has just earned a big place in the record books.Bebe, a 4-year-old longhair Chihuahua, weighs just 2½ pounds and is 6½ inches tall. Those measurements may not add up to much in a dogfight, but they do qualify her as the smallest modeling dog out there.
Owner Nikki Maksymovich said Guinness World Records has given Bebe the title of record holder in that newly created category after seeing the dog posing in various outfits on a website she and her husband created.
“They contacted Nikki through her website and said that they were thinking about doing it,” Jayson Maksymovich said. “They asked her to send in pictures of us holding up tape measures so they could get how tall and long (Bebe) was.”The Maksymoviches have four Chihuahuas.
Their website, ObsessiveChihuahuaDisorder.com, has been growing in popularity since its creation three years ago and brought Bebe to the attention of the Guinness staff, they said.Guinness periodically anoints different Chihuahuas as the new smallest dog.
“I saw one of our friends has the world’s smallest dog, and I know she’s really tiny, but she’s not the smallest dog,” Nikki Maksymovich said of Bebe. “I thought, ‘She does model, so she might as well try it out."
The Maksymoviches said they didn’t hear anything more about Bebe’s potential title until this spring, when a British news outlet called and congratulated them on her win.
Their original certification letter got lost in the mail, but about three weeks ago they received a replacement letter of recognition from Guinness, officially sealing Bebe’s standing as world’s smallest modeling pooch.“She’s the first one that’s gotten it, so she started the category,” Maksymovich said.
Her dogs’ modeling careers started on her blog, she said.“I started posting up pictures of my dogs with the clothes that I bought them and they posed really well,” she said. “As my website got more popular the different companies noticed it and that’s when they asked us to start the modeling.
”She said Bebe makes her signature look by facing away from the photographer and then looking back over her shoulder. The pup has also participated in various runway shows in New York City and has traveled to dog conventions across the U.S.“She travels everywhere with me,”
Maksymovich said. “We took her to Vegas, she’s been to Florida. We go to a lot of the big pet industry conventions. That’s how we get a lot of the jobs, by meeting companies there.”In New York City, Bebe walked in the Pre-Westminster Fashion Show for dogs and wore a dress called Platinum Princess by Canine Couture designer Kelly Owens. (Owens also designed a $6,000 Swarovski Crystal dress for the Pre-Westminster Fashion Show — though Bebe did not model that dress.)
Off the runway, Maksymovich said that Bebe can sometimes be a diva at home. “She has a crush on Jayson, so she’s always competing with me for his attention,” she said.“She gets jealous over kisses, and if I give a hug she’ll try and get in the middle,” her husband said.
The couple recently added a new member to their family, Monte, who is from the same breeder as Bebe and competes in dog shows. But Maksymovich said he will be their last new dog for the foreseeable future.“I’m overwhelmed already,” she said.Contact Devin Loring at (609) 989-5679 or firstname.lastname@example.org
